El Draque

The predecessor of the famous Mojito, created by Sir Francis Drake around 1580.

Ingredients [ oz | cl ][ My Bar ]
2 oz Cuban Rum[ Add ]
6 Mint Leaves[ Add ]
2 tsps Sugar from Sugar Cane[ Add ]
1 Lime[ Add ]
Method: On the rocks
Glass: Old-Fashioned
Recipe:
  1. Drop a few leaves of mint in a short glass.
  2. Cut the lime in 8 pieces. Drop all pieces in the glass.
  3. Add the sugar.
  4. Muddle the lime pieces with a wooden spoon. This will also bruise the mint leaves.
  5. Add a few ice cubes.
  6. Top with cuban rum.

History

Created by Sir Francis Drakea famous English Privateer known as "El Draque" (The Dragon) in the Caribbean (le Dragon). Back then, the drink was made with aguardiente, a primitive predecessor of rum. But quickly, it got replaced with Rum. The recipe evolved and is now called a Mojito.
