According to wikipedia:
This cocktail was introduced by the army of the British East India Company in India.
Tonic water contains quinine, which was used to prevent malaria. In the 18th century, tonic water contained a large amount of quinine, which caused it to have a very bitter taste. Gin was added to make it more palatable.

This drink is a good one but there's a variant that in my opinion is WAY better:
Start with a short glass and pour 1 oz Hendricks into it and drop one slice of cucumber and muddle it, squeeze a lime wedge, then top the glass with ice and add tonic water. Top it up with some cracked pepper (YES! believe me, cracked pepper will enhance the flavors and create an amazing drink)
